Joe Sulpy’s Custom Cars is a third-generation hot rod and custom car shop in Goodyear, Arizona, specializing in hand-crafted metal shaping, pre-1972 rods and customs, panel fabrication and repair, full ground-up builds, and metal shaping classes.

We focus exclusively on pre-1972 custom cars, motorcycles, and exotic vehicles, using traditional hand-crafted metal fabrication techniques—no modern shortcuts or computerized aids. Our services include panel reproduction, chopped tops, suicide doors, custom chassis fabrication, fiberglass work, and complete builds shaped entirely by hand with classic tools.

Joe Sulpy specializes in sheet metal fabrication, engineering and design, and chassis work (no collision repair). His craftsmanship has earned prestigious awards, including three consecutive House of Kolor Prestigious Painter Awards (2011–2013), the DuPont Top Gun Painter Award (2000), the Meguiar's Medallion Award, and recognition as one of the few authorized George Barris builders.

Our metal shaping classes provide hands-on, personalized training in essential timeless skills and equipment, including the English wheel, planishing hammer, hammer and dolly, shrinker/stretcher, slip roller, bead roller, power hammer, louver press, car rotisserie, chassis jig, and four-wheel scales. Classes are limited in size (typically to two students), offered on weekends with lunch provided, and designed to pass on these techniques to the next generation—as well as employees from other hot rod shops.

Meet Joe Sulpy: A third-generation custom car builder, metal shaper, designer, and teacher, Joe grew up immersed in his father's hot rod shop in New Jersey. He started hands-on bodywork at age 8, learned to weld at 11, and chopped his first top at 13. In 1999, at age 25, he opened his own shop in New Jersey—where his father later worked for him for a decade. In 2009, Joe relocated to Goodyear, Arizona, for its ideal weather and rust-free environment.

A dedicated family man and father of two, Joe is proudly passing his skills to his son, "Junior," the fourth generation. His work embodies timeless craftsmanship that inspires reactions like, “Wow, this is the way they should have been made.”
